From Emma Cate:
1. Favorite Field Hockey Memory? Why?

Definitely 2014 Junior Olympics. I had the funniest/goofiest team lead by this Australian coach we could barely understand. I’m pretty sure we lost every game, but we didn’t care because we were having so much fun playing and being with each other.

2.What was your most exciting recruiting experience?
One of the coolest experiences I had on a recruiting visit was at Wake when they were in their pre-game meeting and the coaches pull up a picture of a field with the starting line-up on it. However, the lineup was pictures of famous celebrities. Basically, the girls had to guess who was who on the team to figure out the starting lineup for the game.

3. Why are you playing field hockey in college?
I have loved the game for as long as I can remember and I have a passionate need to prove to myself that I can do this.

4.What have you done this summer to prepare?
I have been honing in on the specific skills that make me a unique player to my team.

5.If you could give one piece of advice to younger girls who want to play field hockey in college, what would it be?
I would say: find the skills your good at and perfect them. Find what makes you different from every other player. There are always going to be great players. But what matters are the things that make you stand out from everyone else.

6.Who was the most influential person in high school?
(Is this a trick question?) Probably Tina. She put up with a lot of my nonsense and my flinching so she should get a lot of credit for that. She helped me work through a lot of low seasons in my career. Props to her for cracking my bad habits and teaching me sooooo much stuff (Hockey and other).

7.Favorite post practice/game snack?
Anything Chocolate. This question should include Pre-Game as well. I have to have my chocolate right before and right after games. Tina has this no sugar rule on tournaments, but I get exempt from that because she knows I don’t function without my chocolate.

8.What pre game rituals do you use to hype yourself up before a game?
Again…Chocolate…

9.What made you want to be a college field hockey player?
I really have fallen in love with the game and I wanted to show myself that I could do this even though I knew it would be a taxing task.

10.What was one of the toughest experiences?
I think the season I am in right now is probably the toughest in my career. Knowing you leave for college in a few months is really challenging because you feel like your time is running out. So the stress of trying to get in shape and get as good as you can as fast as you can is a really hard to manage sometimes. Also just the unknowns of being a college athlete are also very stressful sometimes in the months before you leave.

11.Year you began playing field hockey? Why?
I started playing in 3rd Grade. There was this summer camp that Gateway Field Hockey was hosting at EHS. My two older sisters were signed up. However, Lindsay was sick that day and so she decided to stay home while I went with my mom to drop Lauren off at the camp. When we got there, the director (Good ol’ Kelly Yates) told my mom that I could take Lindsay’s place if I wanted to play. I didn’t have a stick or anything so she brought out this tiny grays stick that somehow fit me! That day, after being the youngest at the camp by like 5 years and stealing the attention of all the older girls, I kept going back to the camp and loved playing.
From Tina:
Favorite Emma Cate Moment (old)/ Why?
  • Two years ago at Festival, Emma Cate was upset because she didn’t think she had played well that day.  We sat down and talked about it and she told me that Chocolate was what she ate prior to her playing well.  It was like a switch went off in her mind and she had found her special “thing” to help her play well.  And it worked!  She had a great rest of the tournament.
Favorite Emma Cate moment (new)/ Why?
  • TBA
Story we will forever tell about EC:
  • The time she didn’t make NFC’s as a freshmen and all of her friends did.  She was so upset, but she worked her butt off the next year - all year. She worked so hard that she made it all the way as an Alternate for Junior National Camp as a sophomore.
  • Such a great runner and example of fitness.  Emma Cate could last an entire game. I don’t think I can recall the amount of times I had to pull EC from a game because she was “tired”. Her energy and legs can last for a very long time, and that is really unique.
  • Her work ethic and unwavering commitment.  Emma Cate had some of the most challenging obstacles during her career.  Physically and emotionally, she pursued through all the challenges.  Whether it was running before school to stay in shape or doing everything she could to play as much as she could, Emma Cate has truly transformed over the past 3 years.
Favorite Emma Cate recruiting moment/ why?
  • She called me after she committed to Wake Forest.  She was so unbelievably excited because she just felt like Wake was “home”. From the start, Emma Cate always wanted to go to Wake.  Emma Cate achieved the thing she worked so hard for, and she was so thrilled.  The incredible thing for her, was once she committed, she immediately kept working to be the best she could possibly be.  She’s done an incredible job over the past 18 months
First memory of Emma Cate / why?
  • My first memory of Emma Cate was when I first started having recruiting meetings. I was meeting with her sister, Lindsay, and her parents. Emma Cate was along just because. She was so little…and just sat at the corner of the table not saying anything. Her sister, Lindsey, was so into field hockey, and her dad commented that Emma Cate "wasn’t really into field hockey anymore" since she had a rough fall.  Emma Cate didn’t play with us that winter...but she joined that spring for our Regional Club Championship to help start the originals group. Ever since, she’s been one of the most committed players to Texas Pride we have ever had.
